We started The Richard Lozano Marathon, the first in S.A. in 1972. Richard was a Burbank High
School graduate who died in a traffic accident coming home  from Pan American University for his
birthday.
We also sponsored the SAMA Distance Relays, and the Free Spirits Track Festival.
The Free Spirits Track Festival is still being run today at Antonian College Prep on 6 Mondays in Jun
and Jul . See "Track Meets" page for details.

As of 15 Aug 2009 the Free Spirits Track Club is officially a
501c3 Public Charity

Formed in 1968, we are the oldest running club in SA.
Originally, we were the San Antonio Marathon Association (SAMA).
In the 70's we became the Free Spirits and today we are recognized by the State of Texas as the
Free Spirits Track Club.
It was established in raise funds for scholarships for cancer survivors (and other diseases), to
recognize our American Heroes and to promote track & field meets, running and athletic events in
the San Antonio area.

Our runners hold the best high school marathon times
                                      in SA history:
Jimmy Garza (Edison HS) 2:51:35 and John Sanchez  
(Kenedy HS) 2:56:40 hold the top two times.  Frank
Granado's 3:04:14 ranks in the top 10. All three are
winners in the first three marathons ever run in SA.
